Track Biography:

The Golden Vale hunt was revived by Tim Hyde and Michael Purcell.

The hounds were hunted by John Pickering, James Foley, Capt. Donald Swan, Rory Dicken, Tom O’Meara, Jim Quinlan and presently by Michael Comerford.

The point-to-point has been run annually at various venues. The first meeting was held at College Hill Templemore and has since been run at Thurles racecourse, Fairyhill Templemore, Coolkip Horse and Jockey, Glenbane Holycross and now at its current venue of Turtulla Thurles.

There is portaloo’s available on the day.

In our bookmakers ring you can view and bet on any off-course races on the day in both England and Ireland.

Whether you want to watch in front of the winning post, as the runners flash by, venture into the centre of the course for a full 360 degree view of the track, or why not base yourself at the final fence to take in the wonderful sight of a thoroughbred racehorse in full flight over a fence? The choice is yours - you will never get any closer to the action!

One of the real joys of a point-to-point is just how close to the action you can get. That also includes our car park, ensuring a day's racing with us offers you the ideal opportunity to being a picnic for family and friends, and base it out of the back of your car.

Come along early and enjoy your picnic before the action gets under way, or take a break midway through the day's racing to enjoy your light refreshments.

Tea, coffee and soft drinks are available from a number of outlets on the course.

There will be something to quench your thirst or curb your caffeine cravings.

No, we do not have an ATM on course. Thurles town is not far from the course and there is an ATM in the service station on the way into the town.

The Clondaw Premier point-to-point is the perfect day out for the family in the countryside and as an added bonus for parents all children U16’s have free admission.

Race goers have the opportunity to get a close up of the action when the runners are being saddled and paraded in the parade ring before their race. The fence in our home straight allows you to get a perfect viewing point of each race whether you are on foot or in the comfort of your car.

With Thurles town only a five minute drive from the track, there is a large selection of shops and restaurants to keep you busy within the area. Thurles is also steeped in GAA history as it is the birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association founded in 1884 by Hayes’ Hotel. Colin Bowe would look to hold the aces with those horses that bring previous form into this. His KHAFRE bumped into a very smart-looking winner on his debut at Lingstown, and he would be unlucky to meet another horse of that calibre a second time out. Stablemate Diamond Flush posted a career-best at Ballycrystal in December, having only joined his stable from Sam Culing during the summer. Whilst An Buachaill Rua was running well prior to his final-fence exit at Lisronagh. Local handler Pat Doyle has won three races in this age group here which could leave his newcomer Kaiser De Chanay as one to note.

RAINBOW CONNECTION was only beaten by just over four lengths at Tattersalls last month and this could be a nice opportunity for her to take a step forward. Whiskey Serenade was unable to back up her Ballycrystal debut in a stronger Dromahane maiden over Christmas. She could find things easier here. Amoroso has changed stables since her last outing when finishing third at Knockmullen House and could step forward on her first start for Andy Slattery.

Ramillies won this race in good fashion last year, but he could have a lot more on his plate this time around if his stablemate WINGED LEADER was to line up in opposition. The reigning champion point-to-pointer was won 27 times between the flags and is currently on a winning run which has seen him win 14 races in a row. Pat Coyne was eight lengths behind him at Ballycrystal last time, whilst open first-timer Keep Me Posted has won his last three point-to-point runs and is respected.

RAG N BONE returns to the point-to-point fields having been running in maiden hurdles of late, and he could be the one to side with here. He may have only made his racing debut last year at the age of seven, but he was able to finish a close second at Tattersalls in April, in a race which has seen the winner frank the form subsequently. We have only seen Minella Mission once; that was when he fell in the back straight at Nenagh, and whilst he departed a good way out, he could still prove to be the danger.

BALLINREA put up a career-best at Borris House last month when stepping into open company for the first time, and if he was able to produce that form which saw him finish closely behind form horses like Priory Park, Er Dancer and Ask DMan, he would be a big player in this. City Slippers won around here in November and he is one of five last-time-out winners that could feature in this, with that particular quintet also including Rathcannon victor Well Buoy.

ERIGMOOR could be an interesting track recruit in this. The seven-year-old was placed three times over fences during the summer when with Gordon Elliott, and if handling the slower conditions on his first outing for new connections, he could be the one to follow. Of those with pointing form, Revolut Ned and Kings Cowboy have both finished placed this season, whilst Long Road was unlucky at Lisronagh in November and would not be winning out of turn.
